Day 186: Awesome Half

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was DOWN today -$998.18 (-0.14%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$150,080.18 (+25.70%). According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +8.24% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). Mother's Little Helper has had a couple of down days, taking a hit with the overall profit taking going on in the broader market. Over the last few days we've shaved off 2.39% from our high of +28.07%. I receive many emails with comments about these posts and requests for my thoughts on specific stocks or approaches to investing. While I don't provide investing advice, I'm happy to share my own thoughts if that helps you find new perspectives. Please pos

Day 184: S&P Going to 2,900

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was UP today +$6,701.22 (0.91%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$161,017.83 (+27.58%). According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +9.02% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). I took a day off yesterday and missed a little dip, but we're back up again today. My apologies to those who were looking for an update to the portfolio. The stock market is still not over valued but is a little pricey. Most of us have three asset classes for investing, Real Estate, Bonds and Stocks; add vintage motorcycles to my list, I especially love the old Vespas and Lambrettas. In San Jose, CA for instance a two bedroom house that sold in the low $3

Day 182: Bullish Veeva Systems

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was DOWN today -$1,124.53 (+0.15%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$166,826.57 (+28.57%). According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +8.94% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). Today I wanted to take a look at one of my favorite companies in the portfolio, Veeva Systems, a Bay Area cloud computing company. Veeva Systems Inc. (VEEV) is our alternative investment in healthcare. VEEV is our 9th best performer year-to-date, turning in a +49.54% return. Healthcare investments usually take the form of a broadly diversified fund made up of large healthcare and pharmaceutical companies. However those companies can present one of two

Day 179: The End of Oil?

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was UP today +$3,913.55 (+0.52%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$167,933.82 (+28.76%) According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +8.91% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). The oil economy is coming to an end. The biggest oil companies in the world, with the exception of Exxon Mobile and Chevron, are preparing for a global shift in energy consumption, the largest since the industrial revolution. Innovations that are driving down fuel consumption and looming legislation that will tax carbon output are not only diminishing demand for oil but also increasing demand and likely subsidies for electric vehicles. Once upon a time co

Day 178: Who Earns 28%?

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was UP today +$1,814.25 (+0.24%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$164,033.78 (+28.09%) According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +8.74% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). I will admit that there was a time during the first week of January when my imagination ran wild and I conceived of this portfolio generating returns as high as we have today. But that was under the influence of a caffeine and M&M's sugar high and naive day dreams! Investing and getting a good return is fun, but blasting the S&P 500 by over 3X makes me a little nervous. But why, why should I be nervous. The economy is strong, companies are reporting good

Day 177: Look Beyond FANG

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was UP today +$5,021.60 (+0.68%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$162,214.77 (+27.78%) According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +8.79% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). Jim Cramer made a great point today on CNBC. Basically he was asking his listeners look beyond the names we hear repeatedly in the media, like Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, Google, NVIDIA and AMD. The fact is there are a lot of great companies where we can find value and growth in other companies that are doing well. Today the portfolio was lead higher by our healthcare stocks, in particular Omeros Corporation. Fresh off an FDA approval OMER has rocketed up o

Day 175: Portfolio Outperforms

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was UP today +$11,112.63 (1.52%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$159,191.08 (+27.26%) According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +9.59% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). I'm looking for other places where the average investor could have put money at the beginning of the year and done as well as we have with a similar amount of risk. I would really love to hear from some of my readers. If you have any suggestions I'd be happy to do a comparative analysis. The best option I've found so far that closely reflects the approach that MLH has taken, and offers a similar risk profile is the Crossing Wall Street Buy and Hold list.

Day 171: Don't Sell Tech

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was DOWN today -1,409.22 (-0.19%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$144,448.13 (+24.74%) According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +8.65% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). Institutional investors are selling tech stocks in large volume, but that doesn't mean you should. In fact I would continue to watch the big tech names and buy on the dip. This includes Apple, Alphabet, Netflix, Amazon and Facebook. The sellers are simply taking profits while they can in names that have run up to some lofty prices. The underlying strength of these companies is not in question. Remember, you are a long term investor. These institutiona

Day 170: Remembering Fred

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up today +$666.06 (+0.09%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$145,791.45 (+24.97%) According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +8.89% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). Yesterday, and the events in Virginia today, reminded me that there are things more important than investing, blogging and prophesying about the future. Yesterday my friend Fred passed away. You probably didn't know Fred, but stay with me for a minute, he had something to say to you. Fred and I met through our mutual passion for woodworking and found that we had a number of other connections, not the least of which is his amazing wife Susan. But I think we s

Day 169: Used Car Bull

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up today +$6,961.10 (+0.96%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$145,110.27 (+24.85%) According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +9.00% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). One of my conviction buys back in December 2016 was Copart Incorporated. Copart, Inc., was founded in 1982 by Willis J. Johnson and began as a single salvage yard in California. Now headquartered in Dallas, Texas, Copart is a global leader in online vehicle auctions, and a premier destination for the resale and re-marketing of vehicles. Copart’s innovative technology and online auction platform links buyers and sellers around the world. Copart currently ope

Day 168: Healthcare leads

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up today +$2,552.14 (+0.35%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$138,279.28 (+23.68%) According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +8.51% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). I took the day off from the blog last Friday, my youngest daughter was graduating from 8th grade and making the big transition to high school. Some things are just more important than watching the stock market. Looks like the technology sector took a beating as investors took profits, but that wasn't the whole story. I think what really triggered the run up in technology stocks is the computer algorithmic trading. The algo's don't care why a stock is goin

Day 164: Teflon - We're Up +24.45%

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up today +$3,004.55 (+0.42%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$142,788.59 (+24.45%). According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +8.71% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). Well, not much happened today...except the former director of the FBI, James Comey, testified before congress and didn't say nice things about the President. An uncertain election is taking shape in the UK amidst a series of terrorist attacks. Mario Drahgi left interest rates at the ECB alone when an increase was expected. The U.S Markets are awaiting the announcement of another rate increase by the Fed. The Pound is falling after May's Conservative par

Day 158: Crossing +23%

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up today +$4,085.62 (+0.57%) . Overall GAIN YTD: +$136,618.18 (+23.40%). According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +8.54% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). Today's biggest gainers had one thing in common, they have very little in common. While there are overlaps in industries like healthcare, technology and semi conductors, even those companies compete in different parts of their respective industries. The more I see positive earnings reports and growth that is broad based the more conviction I get in the strength of this market. Dynavax Technologies is a clinical-stage immunotherapy company Veeva Systems p

Day 157: Coal Museum Goes Solar

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up today +$6,550.93 (+0.92%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$132,353.47 (+22.67%). According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +8.54% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). Maybe I just have a dark and sarcastic sense of humor, but milk came out of my nose when I learned that on the same day President Trump announced the U.S will pull out of the Paris accord, the Kentucky Coal Museum in Benham, KY is switching to solar power. According to the museums Communications Director the museum expects to save $8,000 to $10,000 a year on their energy bill. Checking in on the year to date (YTD) performance of the best mutual funds, we m

Day 156: Sleep On It - Up 21.59%

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up today +$1,359.25 (+0.19%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$126,048.43 (+21.59%). According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +7.73% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). Nothing too exciting to talk about today. Stocks closed lower today with financials leading the losses. Crude oil fell again today, and domestic economic reports were not great. Treasury yields fell and gold was rose and the dollar hunkered down on the flat line. It's always interesting to me that when the market is dull or the news looks grim all the doom and gloom reports flourish. And there seems to be an assumption that the current news will just simpl
