Day 151: Breaking Through 22%?

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up today +3,643.39 (+0.51%) . Overall GAIN YTD: +$128,025.55 (+21.93%). According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +7.91% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). The portfolio is close to breaking through a 22% YTD gain. With some catalysts in healthcare and oil I think we could see some remarkable gains by year end. Below is a graph comparing Mother's Little Helper (blue line) to our benchmark S&P 500 YTD (red line), and the Russell 2000 Index YTD (yellow line). MLH is steadily ahead of both indexes and holds a large margin of error allowing for out performance even if the market declines. Please feel free to a

Day 149: We're #2

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up today +1,204.33 (+0.17%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$119,593.56 (+20.48%). According to CNN Money our benchmark index, the S&P 500 is up +7.39% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). Recently I was talking with a friend about the MLH Portfolio and I just happened to mention, very proudly, that it is up over 20% year-to-date. Much to my surprise my friends response was simply a blank stare, "Is that good?" he said. Well it turns out that my friend is one of the millions of people in the U.S. that is not invested outside of a small 401K plan at work. He has no idea that the market is up, or that we've had one of the biggest bull market

Day 143: Kabuki Theater?

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up today +4,932.95 (+0.72%). Overall GAIN YTD: +$109,835.50 (+18.81%). According to CNN Money the S&P 500 is up +5.67% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). Yesterday the portfolio was down over 2%! The DOW dropped over 350 points! Political turmoil rages in Washington DC! Geo-political events seem to have thrown the whole world into chaos! Right? If you listen to the news that's what you walk away with. It's the old newspaper adage, if it bleeds it leads. But that's just not what's true when it comes to stocks and your investments. Cooler heads have to prevail. That's why when the DOW pulled back yesterday I didn't sit down

Day 141: Remember this Chart!

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up +0.13% today for a gain of +940.78. Overall gain to date: +$120,110.13 (+20.57%). According to CNN Money the S&P 500 is up +7.23% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). The overall theme of this blog has been Invest on your own and stay invested. The chart below is my favorite because it shows why you should stay invested and how to recognize when you should be holding more cash in your account. A big Shout Out to First Trust for creating this infographic and of course recognition of their copyright to this gem. The upward trending blue sections are bull markets, the downward trending orange sections are bear markets and the ve

Day 140: Where can you get 20%?

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up +0.95% today for a gain of +6,644.20. Overall gain to date: +$119,243.73 (+20.42%). According to CNN Money the S&P 500 is up +7.30% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). I love those 20% coupons that Bed Bath & Beyond sends me. For Mother's Day I got a 20% discount from Harry & David's but I couldn't bring myself to use it - I just felt cheap. If you pay off a credit card with a 20% rate that's the same as earning 20% on your money. The Mother's Little Helper Portfolio cleared a psychological milestone today as the YTD overall return rose above 20% to settle at +20.42% at the close. Investors seem less and less concerned about

Day 135: S&P Breakout?

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up +0.75% today for a gain of +$5,228.36. Overall gain to date: +$114,946.69 (+19.69%). According to CNN Money the S&P 500 is up +7.18% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). The markets appear poised for a break out, if you believe in things like technical analysis, charting, tea leaves, Fibonacci numbers, unicorn kisses and four leaf clovers. I don’t put a lot of stock into these things, I follow them just enough to be knowledgeable. For the record I do not enjoy unicorn kisses. What I do believe is that emotion drives a lot of investing. For many, emotion is the rocket fuel that gets them to buy in at inflated prices, and emot

Day 134: Never Short A Dull Market

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up +0.33% today for a gain of +$2,302.04. Overall gain to date: +$110,097.44 (+18.86%). According to CNN Money the S&P 500 is up +7.06% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). I hope my readers don’t mind that my posts are sporadic, I feel that it’s in keeping with the purpose of this portfolio and a subtle reminder that we don’t need to watch our investments every day. Last Thursday I took a trip with my girlfriend to attend The Quail Motorcycle Gathering in Carmel Valley, CA. I had two bikes entered in the show, met a lot of really great people, enjoyed some amazing food, had some-more’s by the fire pit every night and avoided ta

Day 128: Citrix Systems Buy-Out?

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was down -0.26% today for a loss of -$1,800.96. Overall gain to date: +$114,384.80 (+19.59%). According to CNN Money the S&P 500 is up +6.67% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). Citrix Systems, our best performing company to date, appears to be in the middle of a bidding war. The stock is up 7.65% today as of this writing. According to sources at Bloomberg, three private equity firms; Bain Capital, The Carlyle Group and Thoma Bravo have all made bids for the Florida software company. Citrix Systems is not commenting on the rumors, but investors are taking it seriously enough to bid up the shares. There is one question I want answe

Day 127: Up +19.89% stay invested

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up +0.23% today for a gain of +$1,630.13. Overall gain to date: +$116,124.52 (+19.89%). According to CNN Money the S&P 500 is up +6.80% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). The big story today is......we're up +19.89%. The S&P 500 is up 6.80%. Kevin O'Leary of Shark Tank fame has an exchange traded fund called O'Shares (OUSA) it's only up +5.48% so you did better buying an S&P 500 index fund for a fraction of the cost. Bershire Hathaway B shares are up 1.51% YTD. So overall we should be happy with the return. Let's see how the rest of the year plays out. IPG Photonics, Dorman Products, Mylan and Pfizer all reported earnings t

Day 126: Don't Sell The News!

The Mother's Little Helper portfolio was up +0.51% today for a gain of +$3,564.42. Overall gain to date: +$114,486.76 (+19.61%). According to CNN Money the S&P 500 is up +6.68% Year To Date (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/sandp/). The MLH Portfolio is still up almost 3X the S&P 500. Today was a great example of why you don’t “Trade the News”, instead listen and find the opportunity. Today at a meeting with the Independent Community Bankers of America President Trump once again brought up the idea of breaking up the big banks. Recall from the campaign that he had suggested this idea and claims that he’s working on that now. I guess he didn’t have enough to do with taxes and healthcare.
